💳 Split Payments and Client Credits

We're separating payments from invoices so a single invoice can be covered by multiple payments, including split charges across two different cards. If a client pays part of a session with their HSA and the rest with a regular card, you'll record that in one invoice instead of working around it.

When more than one card is saved for a client, you'll pick which one to charge at the point of payment rather than relying on whichever card is set as default. Most clients only have one card on file, but for HSA, FSA, or family-paid sessions, this means you stop swapping cards in and out.

If a client overpays, the extra amount becomes a credit on their account that automatically applies to the next invoice, so you stop tracking balances in a separate spreadsheet.

    Write-offs in billing

Many therapists offer a sliding scale. Please add a write-off dropdown to the price being billed so the new amount is what is sent, and the write-off can be documented for tax and analytics purposes. For example, if I charge $200 and a client is paying $150- they get the “bill” for $150 only, and in my system it shows that I can write off $50 off of the practice’s total monthly income

    split billing

Some clients pay either overtime (split payments or payment plan) or have someone else, or an organization, pay for some of their therapy, or they need certain documents for their insurance. Please add a way to “split the bill”

Does split payment mean they can have multiple cards on file?? Because I really, really need this feature for several clients who use an HSA card and then pay “the remainder” on their regular credit card. Currenlty, you’re only allowed one card on file.

@Darleen Gracia You can already store multiple cards on file, but until now each invoice had to be paid in full with a single card – you couldn’t split one invoice between two cards. This is exactly what’s changing with split payments, so you’ll be able to pay part of an invoice with one card (for example HSA) and the remainder with another.

Really? My client has tried several times (a few months ago) and it wouldn’t let her. It didn’t give me the choice to select which card I would use. It would just replace the existing one with the old one. When was this update added?

@Darleen GraciaMultiple cards on file has been supported for a while, so what you ran into is most likely a discoverability issue rather than a missing feature.

Two ways to manage cards today:

          1. Client → Payments tab → Settings button

          2. Edit client → Billing tab

Both lead to the same place. Fair warning: that "Settings" button is not labeled as clearly as it should be — even folks on our team have stumbled on it. We'll fix the label.

The genuinely new piece coming with split payments is paying one invoice across two cards (e.g. HSA for part, regular card for the rest). That hasn't been possible until now and is exactly what you'll need for the HSA + remainder flow.

If after trying the path above still replaces the existing card instead of stacking, that's a bug. Let us know at support@upheal.io and we'll get on it.
