Auto-populate CPT Code & 90837 Justification
It would be helpful if CPT codes were populated automatically, but more importantly, I’ve noticed a new outcome in the compliance checker related to using 90837. Justification for the 90837 should be integrated into the medical necessity section of the AI-generated note.

Could there be a Justification for 90837 Section as now people are getting audited solely for this reason.

The 90837 justification is a bit more nuanced. While we’re often asked to include this directly in notes, what we’ve learned from working closely with behavioral health coding consultants is that audits rarely hinge on a specific justification statement. Instead, they focus on how the session content and presenting concerns connect to the broader treatment plan which is why we have “The Golden Thread” style of documentation built throughout Upheal. That continuity is what truly supports audit readiness.
Because of that, we’ve chosen not to include a dedicated 90837 justification section. In most cases, a well-documented medical necessity narrative should be sufficient.
That said, some customers have found success adding a Smart Section to their templates to explicitly address 90837 justification when needed. Hope that helps.
