👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Therapy Support in Upheal

Family therapy now has its own contract type in Upheal, so you can create a proper unit of treatment for families rather than working around the individual or couples contract. If you do family therapy today, you've probably been improvising with workarounds, and that shouldn't be necessary.

You create a family contract and add two or more participants with their roles (parent, child, guardian, and so on). From there, sessions work the way you'd expect: confirm which family members were present, capture the session using any method you already use (telehealth, in-person, dictation), and the AI generates a note with all present participants reflected in the header. New family-specific intake and progress note templates are in the template library, with Smart Sections that adapt to the session.

We've also added separate client reference settings for couples and family notes, so you can choose how participants are identified (first names or initials) independently from your individual note preferences. No more toggling settings between sessions. When you invoice a family, you choose which client the invoice goes to, and consent forms and Client Portal access work correctly for multi-participant contracts, so the family experience is built end-to-end.

Automatically blasting the same intake packet to everyone in a family system is a current flaw, I don’t need a Payment Authorization from a minor when their mom is paying for example.

There’s a calendaring limitation right now—I’m using a family contract, but if I want to meet with the child one day of the week and the parents a different day of the week for example, I can only schedule The Whole Family both times. It’s extremely useful to be able to meet with different combinations of individuals within the family.

(This also applies to couples—for example, I need to be able to meet with Him, Her, or Both)

I do many family sessions with a child (identified client) and a parent. I would like the AI content to only refer to the identified client as “client” and to designate how to refer to the parent or other adult present.

Case Snapshot Reflects only one client of couple

The case snapshot generated by the AI seems to only address one of the clients in the couple. Subsequently the Treatment Plan formulation does not take the second client into consideration either. This makes these functions almost useless for couples clients. Is this being addressed? Thank you.

    Forms for couples

I ran into an issue where I have a couples account where I sent them forms that I created for them to fill out that would be considered an assessment. I added both their emails under their personal info. I went into their couples account and clicked on Forms. Then, send the packets that I created. When they reported back to me, they said that only one of them got the forms. Plus, once they filled it out and submitted it, it didn’t tell me who actually filled out the form. In my email inbox, it indicated who it was based on their email, but back in the Forms tab, it only tells me the date it was completed and submitted. I don’t know which member of the couple actually filled it out. So, I actually have to create two individual accounts for each of them that I can then send the forms to and then will know who is filling them out. This would be very helpful if this could be updated so I know which member of the couple actually filled out the form.

Hi, thank you for reporting this!

We investigated the form sending flow for couples accounts and here's what we found:

      • Sending forms to both partners — the system is designed to send forms to both partners individually when both have email addresses set up. When you send a form or packet from a couples account, a separate form request is created for each partner, and each receives their own email with a unique link to fill out the form.

      • Tracking who filled out the form — in the Forms tab, you should see two separate rows per form, one for each partner (see the attached screenshot), each with a small avatar icon indicating which partner it belongs to. You can hover over the avatar to see the partner's name.

If only one partner received the form, there may have been a delivery failure on our end. To help us investigate further:

      1. Could you check the Forms tab for the couples account — do you see two separate rows for the same form (one per partner with different avatar icons), or just one?

      2. Could you share the provider email you used to send the forms? We'll look into the logs to trace what happened.
